Today's Hoax...err...Haunt: Forwarding Hoaxes And Why You Shouldn't Send Them...
The following paragraph was forwarded to Alex's Y! Messenger account. It has been edited because of spelling mistakes and punctuation marks. Please note that the paragraph to come is JUST A HOAX and is NOT to be forwarded.
Yahoo! is planning to take away Yahoo! Messenger by August 25th, 2001. If you want to keep out Yahoo! Messenger free of charge, send this to everyone you know. It will be used as a petition. Each person you send this to counts as a "signature". If this petition gets 1,000,000 signatures they will keep Yahoo Messenger. If they do not receive 1,000,000 votes you will have to pay $10.00 to have Messenger (per month). If you don't care about this then please for everyone.... copy and paste this message to everyone!
I have all reasons to believe that was a hoax like all the other hoaxes received. Really, think of it. If Yahoo! was really going to shut down Y! Messenger, wouldn't you think that they would not only tell all the members of Y!/GeoCities that that was going to happen and also put it somewhere on their site? Why would they still be promoting to use their FREE Y! Messenger if they were going to either take it down or start charging? Besides, there's too many messages being sent...How could they honestly keep track of who gets what forward and when?
Not only that, if any of you wonder if it is a true hoax, which it is, just go and look it up through Yahoo. On a help page via Yahoo (before they restructured the help/ask section) they had a page saying that it was a hoax, and I quote, "Yahoo! Messenger is, and will continue to be, a free service."
Gee, with all these forwards and hoaxes out there, it makes me wonder how many people out there will learn that they're taking the word 'Gullible' to a new low.
In my opinion, if you do send these hoaxes, especially to any of us, you're basically saying, "Hey, I'm gullible. The person that forwarded this to me is gullible too. You can be gullible as well if you send this to everyone on your list within 24 hours of receiving it. Don't and something unspeakably horrible will happen to you. How do I know this? I don't...I'm just as gullible as everyone else who forwarded this message without actually taking the time to find out if this is real or just another laughable hoax."
